Marko Aratea, a 4th year Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English and a Literary/Editorial Correspondent of our publication, and Vince Sherna Cayabyab, a 4th year Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management, conquered the ALCUR3 Student Research Conference 2023 as he won the Outstanding Research Presenter award.

In an online interview with The Forefront, Aratea shared that the research was all about the relationship between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension among the students, which was their study when they were 3rd year students in the Language Education Research course.

He stated that having an enthusiastic presentation and confidence in their study helped him answer all questions instantly and achieve the said award.

“I was very grateful and happy, knowing that it will be such a great help for our program, now that it will be revisited for level 2 accreditation. Having this honor and trust given to me by our CEAS research coordinator and English program coordinator, I was very exhilarated that I was able to bring them and our institution the award and honor,” Aretea answered on how he felt after the awarding ceremony.

He also expressed his deep gratitude to his co-researcher, Ms. Cheryl Ara Placido, who helped him prepare for the competition. Also, the College of Education, Arts, and Sciences (CEAS) Research Coordinator, Mr. Kristoffer Obispo, the English Program Coordinator, Ms. Catherine Mobo, and the Gordon College Research Development and Community Extension Services (GC RDCES) for the moral support and trust they gave them.

“The great advice that I can give to them is to know their research in every aspect of it and just enjoy the moment. You have nothing to be afraid of and you will not be nervous if you know your study even if there are lots of questions thrown at you. Also, be confident and enthusiastic. These will truly show that you know what you are talking about and you are happy to share the fruitful result of your research study with everyone,” he added.

Meanwhile, Cayabyab presented a study called “Tourism Stakeholders’ Level of Acceptance towards Kalaklan Cemetery as a Dark Tourism Site.”

“Siguro, it’s the confidence and ‘yung direct to the point na presentation and pagsagot. I personally think na if you know your study well, you would be able to present it confidently, and since may time limit ang presentation and q&a dapat direct to the point lang. walang halo halo na statement,” she stated.

Cayabyab was very thankful to Sir Vincent De La Cruz for giving her the opportunity, to Ma’am Lovelyn Ceralde and Ma’am Kimberly Recitis, to those panels that shared some suggestions for our study during the Gordon College Research Forum, to her family, friends, groupmates, and to her partner for their support and help.

“The advice that I could give is to take your study seriously and “isapuso.” Hindi madali ang research. Trial and error s’ya. sobrang daming revisions, sobrang daming suggestions, and sobrang daming kailangan “i-search.” Pero as long as you took everything seriously and tinake into consideration mo lahat, you will be able to present your study well. Be confident din, may times na mags-stutter ka talaga pero shake it off agad and proceed lang. Kahit may times na mag “uhm” ka proceed lang and be direct to the point,” Cayab advice for the incoming students that will represent Gordon College.
