The College of Allied Health Studies (CAHS) held its annual 24th Capping, Badging, and Candle Lighting Ceremony for Level 2 Students under the Bachelor of Science in Nursing with the theme, “GC Nurses: Promoting Equity and Diversity in Nursing towards Universal Health Care,” on November 29, 2023, at Subic Bay Travellers Hotel.

Ms. Noreen A. Espedido, Chief Nurse of James L. Gordon Memorial Hospital and the keynote speaker of the event said, “My dear fellow registered nurses, we should envision as someone who renders quality care to different kinds of clients, regardless of their social situation and without having discrimination. Upon receiving, you are accepting the burden of the sick.” Receiving the cap and pin and lighting their candles is a symbol of their official initiation into entering the world of nursing.

Furthermore, as part of the ceremony, the nurses pledged themselves to the Florence Nightingale Pledge that signifies their devotion to the field of nursing officiated by Ms. Angelica Donasco, a clinical instructor portraying the mother of modern nursing.

Ms. Shantelle Resurrection, a Level 2 student, expressed her appreciation for the parents who attended. “We wouldn’t be here as official student nurses if it wasn’t for your unending love and support. Cheers to all of our hard work that pays off tonight!” she uttered.

Dr. Quimen presented 37 male and 90 female student nurses, summing up to 127 student nurses, and was accepted by Prof. Pame, on behalf of the BOT Chairman and City Mayor, Hon. Rolen C. Paulino Jr. making them official student nurses who are ready to partake in clinical duties and settings.

The event was attended by the College Officials, led by the College President, Prof. Arlida M. Pame, the Board of Trustees (BOT), and City Officials. Along with them are the CAHS faculty members, part-time and full-time clinical instructors, led by Dr. Victor C. Quimen Jr., CAHS Dean. The candidates, together with their parents and guardians, were warmly welcomed by Ms. Sheila Oconer, on behalf of the Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Darwin Paguio.

As the event concluded, Ms. Anita Manalo, the Level 2 Coordinator, congratulated the candidates along with their parents and guardians for their efforts in making the event successful, including the student volunteers.
