Instructions for Gordon College Students: Clean As You Go & Bring Your Own Trash Policy
Purpose:
To foster a clean and respectful campus environment while promoting sustainability through personal responsibility for waste.
—
1. Prepare Your Materials:
– Bring Your Own Trash: Carry a small, reusable bag or container to collect any waste you generate during class or activities. This could be a sturdy tote, a lunch bag, or any suitable container.
– Plan for Snacks/Drinks: If you plan to consume food or beverages, pack them in a way that minimizes waste (e.g., reusable containers, bottles).
—
During Class or Activity:
2. Maintain Your Space:
– Keep Your Area Clean: Throughout the session, stay vigilant about your surroundings. Avoid leaving papers, wrappers, or any personal items strewn about.
– Immediate Clean-Up: If you create a mess (accidental spills, paper cuts, etc.), address it promptly. If cleaning supplies are available, use them to tidy up immediately.
3. Responsible Waste Management:
– Use Your Reusable Container: Whenever you have waste, place it in your reusable bag or container. Keep it nearby for easy access.
– Respect Shared Spaces: Be mindful of not just your space but also those around you. Dispose of any common area waste (e.g., napkins from community snacks) in your own trash.
—
After Class or Activity:
4. Final Cleanup:
– Inspect Your Area:
Before leaving, take a moment to ensure your seating area and any communal spaces (tables, chairs) are tidy.
– Empty Your Trash into Appropriate Bins: When you leave the classroom or activity, empty your reusable container at designated trash or recycling bins outside the classroom (if available). Take anything that belongs to you with you.
5. Dispose Responsibly:
– Recycle When Possible: If your waste is recyclable, place it in the recycling bin. Be sure to check the college’s recycling guidelines to ensure proper disposal.
—
Additional Responsibilities:
6. Encourage a Culture of Cleanliness:
– Remind Peers:If you notice a classmate leaving a mess, gently remind them or offer to help.
– Lead by Example: Demonstrating your commitment to the “Clean As You Go” policy can inspire your peers to do the same.
7. Feedback and Improvement:
– Participate in discussions or feedback sessions organized by the college to share your insights on how the Clean As You Go policy is working.
8. Engage with Initiatives:
– Stay updated on any college-led environmental initiatives or clean-up days, and participate actively when you can.
