TF Staff Strikes 2nd at OSSEI

The Forefront, Gordon College official student publication’s first ever participation at the Organization of Student Services Educators, Inc. (OSSEI) National Training Workshop earned an award as the ‘Best Published Opinion Article’ held at Baguio Crown Legacy Hotel, Baguio City from September 27-29, 2018.

Fourteen staff members of the student publication, including school paper adviser Mr. John Carlo Alona partook in the training workshop which featured speakers directly affiliated with mainstream media networks ABS-CBN and GMA as co-hosts of the said event. The speakers taught the participants from various schools the technical and moral aspects of News Writing, Feature Writing, Editorial Writing, Photojournalism, Editorial Cartooning, Newspaper Layout and Multimedia Arts. A competition was also held by the organizers during the event, evaluating and selecting the best published articles by a school paper for each category.

The Forefront’s award-winning piece, titled, “Striking LGBT Individuals with Bible Passages” by Lee Robin Bonifacio, former Features and Literary Editor, garnered praise from the event organizers enough to later finish second place as among the schools’ best published opinion articles.


BAComm students attend MBC Youth Journ Workshop

BA Communication students from the College of Education, Arts and Sciences (CEAS) participated in the 3rd MBC Youth Broadcast Journalism Workshop held last May 26 to 28, 2018 at the Development Academy of the Philippines in Tagaytay City.

The workshop was spearheaded by DZRH, the flagship AM radio station of the Manila Broadcasting Company. It was attended by 160 students who are taking up broadcasting and journalism programs from various universities and colleges in the country.

Lecture presentations and workshops were given and facilitated. Speakers including Senators JV Ejercito, Cynthia Villar, and Nancy Binay shared insights on communication skills and leadership, importance of citizen journalism, and promotion of positive change through social media, respectively.

Ben Alen Palingayan, one of the fourth year students who attended the worshop, bagged the Best Performance in an Audio Visual Presentation Award.


Gordon College claims the Championship in the 2018 ICDL Digital Challenge National Finals

Gordon College CCS won in the National Finals in the 2018 ICDL Digital Challenge last June 8, 2018 held at Treston International College, Taguig City. Mr. Dieco Von Velasco, BSCS 3rd year, bested other competitors among the Top 40 finalist from different colleges and universities around the country.

The national round was composed of two (2) rounds; the Elimination and Final Round. The Elimination Round covers exams on Online Essentials and Online Collaboration for 45 minutes each to select the Top 10 competitors to proceed to the Final Round.

The Final Round covers Intermediate Spreadsheet and Intermediate Presentation exams for 45 minutes each and the top 2 students with the highest average score will represent the Philippines in the Grand Finals of the 2018 ICDL Digital Challenge to be held on September 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Together with Mr. Velasco, Mr. Jerald Megino from Southern Luzon State University will represent the Philippines in the Grand Finals.

The Top 2 students received a trophy, a Huawei Y6 smartphone, a round-trip ticket to Bangkok and a 2-nights hotel accommodation courtesy of ICDL Asia.

Mr. Velasco was joined by his co-finalists from Gordon College CCS namely; Cedric Labrador (BSIT), Jeremy Arrabe (BSIT), Ian Sison (BSIT), Daniel Joshua Umandap (BSIT), Lance Asiatico (BSIT) and Vanessa Manlapat (BSIT) with their coach Mr. Arnie Armada.


Gordon College Wins Big in the 3rd Y4IT Research Summit

Student researchers from Gordon College CCS bag the Best Poster and Best Oral Presentation for Computer Science Category in the recently held 3rd Y4IT Research Summit at UPFI Film Center, Diliman, Quezon City on March 9, 2018.

The Best Poster award was awarded to the paper: “DECRAPIFY: A Reusable Scrap Resource Sharing Platform For Waste and Disposal Management Using Progressive Web Framework”. The authors of the paper are Richard Samson, Christine Mon and Gabriel John Perez with their project adviser is Mr. Melner Balce.

The Best Oral presentation was given to “BUKO (Buhay Komyuter): A Cross-Platform Application for Public Commuters’ Feedbacks and Reviews for PUVs using Crowd-Sourcing Model and Sentiment Analysis Algorithm” by John Ray Guerra, Joshua Pasol and Jolyn Pingal with their project adviser Mr. Arnie Armada.

Students were able to participate in this event through the assistance of the Dr. Roel P. Anicas, the research director of Gordon College.


Gordon College CCS makes it to the Top 10 of the Philippine Startup Challenge 4

The Department of Information and Communications Technology – DICT and the Philippine Software Industry Association officially announced the 10 finalists of the 4th Philippine Startup Challenge.

Team Fibonacci from Gordon College CCS was shortlisted as finalist with their app: “SMS (Send Me to School): A Scholarship Vetting and Searching Mobile Web Application for Tertiary Students using String Matching Algorithm”. It is is a scholarship-matching application designed to ease the scholarship searching and application process.

PSC 4 finalists is a mix of teams from Luzon (3 teams), Visayas (3 teams) and Mindanao (4 teams).
